Retaining wall collapsed in Kohima; Heavy to moderate rainfall to continue
State Disaster Management Authority, NSDMA, Home Department last month said that Nagaland experiences 29 per cent seasonal deficiency in rainfall. Kohima on Thursday afternoon received rainfall resulting a retaining wall collapsed in the Jail Colony, below BSNL Office around 1:30 pm. There were no casualties; however, at least 6 motor bikes which parked on the roadside were partially damaged.
A colony Panchayat representative informed that the district administration and disaster management took stock of the damage area.
Heavy to moderate rainfall to continue till about October 20
The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department in coordination with the Regional Meteorological Center, Guwahati issued weather updates on Thursday. Heavy to moderate rainfall activity is expected in the State over the following week, said NSDMA.
The state of Nagaland registered rainfall deficiency of 26% during monsoon seasons from June 1st to September 30th. Rainy season is going to continue till about October 20, 2020, NSDMA informed.
A weather system has formed in the Bay of Bengal, likely to persist over the region for the next 4 – 5 days. No extreme weather activity is expected, it added.
However, moderate rain and Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning is expected mostly during evening and night between October 01 to 06, 2020, it said.
Improvement of weather expected from October 07, 2020 onwards and light weather activity between October 7 – 10, 2020. During this period, thundershowers and lighting accompanied with heavy rain is expected in the district of Kiphire, Kohima, Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Peren, Phek and Tuensang. Moderate and light rain is expected in Dimapur district, NSDMA stated.
NSDMA, Home Department has urged the public to exercise caution to avoid any eventualities during this period. Public are requested not to shelter under large trees and near the river banks to prevent unnecessary risk to life from lightning and landslide.
The department also requested all the DDMAs and other line departments who are responsible to attend to any emergencies caused by natural calamities, to be on alert to save lives and properties during this period.
